Okay, so I was on an MSN website earlier, originally looking up old myths about health/food etc, like humans DON'T use 10% of their brains and gum does NOT take seven years to digest, that sort of thing.
Anyway, there was a link away from that stuff and one of the links from that link was 'What not to wear...EVER' and because I am a bit interested in fashion, I thought I'd see what they deemed as unwearable - it was ridiculous. Not ridiculous as in the stuff was so bad I nearly threw up my chocolate eclairs but ridiculous as in, 8/10 of these things were perfectly fine, let me go through them all [the link is here if you want a look at the clothes I describe]:
#1 - The shell suit - One of the only ones that I agreed with, this is what grandads wear when they go for a jog, you know, that shiny material that sounds like tights jeans on fat thighs rubbing together but worse? Basically a track suit thing that attracts more attention than is necessary and has that awful noise to go with.
What I think they look good with - NOTHING.
#2 - The poncho - Okay, to be fair, this can only be pulled off if you wear the right things with them and they aren't too overly done, unlike the example on that website. It was fine to slag it off then because the one on display didn't look good but it still can be pulled off, there's nothing with with a good poncho. And if you watch The Mighty Boosh, you'll have learnt that it's impossible to be unhappy in a poncho. ![]()
What I think they look good with: Skinny jeans and boots that go with the poncho itself.
#3 - Leg warmers - Some can look disgusting actually, especially if you wear them over trousers but....why would you do that?? [skinnes jeans MAY be an exception] Anyway, leg warmers are fine I think, but usually when people mention them, they tend to think of them gym classes with tight Lycra suits and that, but it doesn't always have to be like that! Leg warmers with trainers also don't really go that well.
What I think they look good with: Short skirts and small shoes or pumps that go with the leg warmers, if they clash then the whole outfit clashes. If you get the right skinny jeans, they can look goof with them too, just not pulled up too high!
#4 - Clogs - Okay, these can look so nice if they're the right type. See, on the site they briefly mention those Amsterdam stereotypical wooden clogs, which is fair as those are too far and make the feet look tiny but traditional clogs look fine! What I am hating right now are those sort of clog/jelly shoes things that 'in' right now, they're horrible! They give jelly sandals a bad name when they can look good, like my old purple Barble ones.... Anyway, again, clogs with any sort of long trousers I don't think can ever look good.
What I think they look good with: Skirts [if they aren't too long...maybe stick with short skirts] and shorts. But hot pants and clogs?
[ie. NO]
#5 - Braces - Not to make your teeth straight, but those ones that get attached to your bottoms. What's wrong with them? If they're not too thick and go with your outfit then they can look electric! They are a lovely accessory to go with your outfit if it's looking too plain, but NEVER with a heavy outfit like a jumper or thick trousers, why you'd even try that....I don't know.
Here's Chris Corner from IAMX and formerly the Sneaker Pimps sporting some braces, and he looks lovely! [not mine, taken by Nic, a friend]

What I think they look good with: T-Shirt and shorts/skirt [again, not too long....I think I just hate long skirts]
#6 - Tank tops - not the ones butch gay men wear [stereotype aleeeert!], but the one they were showing was one for women where it just basically looks like a waistcoat and there's nothin' wrong with a waistcoat, in fact, I friggin' LOVE waistcoats! All it is is like a vest over a top, what's wrong with that? If you wear nothing underneath then that is a bit worse but still no reason why it can't look good!
What I think they look good with: A nice shirt, really, but it HAS to be longer that the tank top itself by quite a bit if you want it to look nice and if it's a small tank top.
#7 - Platform shoes - These are fine as long as you manage to pull them off without looking too 'slutty' and don't wear them with long trousers, why you would, I don't know. But yeah, as long as they're not too huge or make your feet look small [and you can actually walk in them] then there's no reason why you can't wear them. Also, if you've got thin legs then maybe huge platforms aren't for you as they WILL emphasis them and make them look like sticks.
I also love Mary Jane shoes [like these] and platforms are essentially those but bigger, so it's all good!
What I think they look good with: An above the knee skirt and a nice top to compliment the skirt, hair down may actually make them look better too so the attention isn't JUST on the huge shoes, bigger hair will also compliment the shoes more.
#8 - Ra-Ra skirts - The only problem I have with these is that usually they are NO good on a windy day if they're short as they get blown up so easily because of how light they usually are, but apart from that, they look lovely - the extra layer[s] add decoration. The site said they only look good on cheerleaders and people like that but they're so nice as long as there aren't too many layers.
What I think they look good with: Anything except thick tops.
#9 - Culottes - I have ALWAYS hated these!!! They're just essentially big shorts that look like skirts until you realise they aren't. They look hideous and you can see right up them if you sit in a certain way. because they aren't really shorts, they're pretending! They just make people look stocky, I hate the way they look, yuck. I can't even really think of any benefits apart from maybe if you can't choose between a skirt and shorts? [if you can't, don't even buy them, look elsewhere!]
What I think they look good with: NOTHING
#10 - Skirts with big boots [not knee high boots, just big ones] - I've not really had a problem with this apart from if they're big trainers, but big boots are fine with any kind of skirt as long as they aren't something like biker boots with knee high or below skirts because that can also create the stocky look. Same with the type of skirt, but I think denim skirts can be pulled off any time with big boots.
What I think they look good with: Any skirt that isn't knee high or below.
