The 5 Levels of Fangirl

by STiCKs13 @ 09 Mar. 2008 - 21:56:34

I decided to do this because the word' fangirl' is thrown about a lot these days, on the internet, when talking about a particular band/celebrity etc. So, I've realised that fangirls can't just be put into one group because it's the severity that counts, I think.

I also did it because I've been called a fangirl a lot recently and I wanted to 'analyse' this further as my own personal image of one is not what I think I am.

My own definition of a fangirl that I've seen A LOT of, would be something like this [genuine comment from a Horrors fan]:

hello hello beautiful doll
you are like that the biggest, brilliant and
beautiful child of the world
I love you
I love you
you are a real marvel
kisses thousands of chocolate
grand voice you are simply beautiful

And another genuine comment from a...well, you'll guess who she's a fan of:

I saw him down Camden across the road today!! I was like OMG OMG OMG ITS NOEL FIELDING!!! And he was like just walking along like he wasnt famous! I WAS LIKE :O:O:O he was well sexyyy =)

How the FUCK do you walk around like you ARE famous?! Oh, so Noel was walking down the street like an ordinary person? Really? Wow...are you sure? This is huge!

Usually though, my ideology of a fangirl involves more exclamation marks with 1's, this - <3333333333, and asking for their hand in marriage.

I also guess they're the 'modern day' definition of a groupie? But they're getting younger. A groupie in my eyes is more my age or a bit older that follow bands about usually for sex. A fangirl is a bit like this but younger and I think less interested in sex than my definition of a groupie.

But whatever, that's only my stereotypical definition and is probably wrong.

In the list, the 'target' will be the person being fangirled over. Let us begin:

1. Cool/Barely even a fangirl [The 'yum' fangirl]

Symptoms:

Thinking a band member is attractive and commenting on it
Sometimes not even actively realising the target is attractive unless prompted/reminded

2. Mild [The 'I'd hit that....' fangirl]

Symptoms:

Thinking the target is attractive and wanting to meet them quite badly
Wanting an autograph/picture
Admiring a photo of them for a while

3. Heating up [The 'you are soooooo hot ^_^' fangirl]

Symptoms:

Wanting to be friends with them just because they're famous
Flirting with them in person
Going to every single gig of theirs, even if funds or other factors don't allow it
Commenting on a picture about how sexual the target is when the picture isn't of any sexual nature at all
Disturbing the target in everyday life for a photo/autograph/chat and then wanting to hang out with them afterwards
Wanting to meet them very very badly
Getting quite jealous of the target's lover
Cutting a relationship off with someone just cause they sad a bad thing about the target

4. Boiling [The 'OMG I LOVE YOU!!!' fangirl]

Symptoms:

Caring eff all about the target's speciality and only focusing on the looks (possibly not even knowing what the target has DONE to be famous)
Mild stalking
Going insane at little things the target might do, like drinking a bottle of water
Getting a tattoo of the target because they're attractive
Wanting to meet them and would hurt anyone in their way
Getting very annoyed that the target is in a relationship or not of their sexual orientation
Having such a large collection of the target's pictures that the computer crashes

5. OH MY FRICK, THAT'S HOT!! [The 'OMG OMG OMG OMGLAAAAWWLLL!11!!11!!!!!' fangirl]

Symptoms:

Asking for marriage
Saying what sexual things they want to do to them
Many many unnecessary exclamations usually written in capital letters
Stalking
Fan-letters...the creepy kind
Constant commenting on their myspace
Genuinely believing that the target is their lover/loves them
Fainting
Getting in touch with the target's friends/family to ask about them
Devoting EVERYTHING to them
Smelling the target's clothes and getting off on it
Claiming 'ownership' of the target

obviously we are level six.

and this quote is better than the one you used for an example, i think.

"WUALAAA....

OH I HANDCUFF MIO!!.. I LOVE YOU.. YOU ARE THE MAXIMUM THING... BUT you connect every that a king dies!! Ehh .. and since like already almost there is no pos gun-sight!! Almost not t connect!!!"

that was for josh. i was sold at "handcuff."

but in all seriousness, i agree with all of this. though level one and two are barely even fangirly. and i probably fit into those two levels best. :)

Yeah but your deifition of a fangirl is a really enthusiastic one remember. :p

But I do agree with you, sometimes I'm a perfect level one, it just depends how outlandish the 'target' decides to be. Like, I 'fangirl' over Noel more than Julian because he dresses in such a way that makes you want to look and he's got a realy uniquely attractive face...Julian doesnt; yet I love them both.

And that comment for Josh is insane...seriously, I barely even understand that.

I am extremely obsessed with a few things, mostly:
The Boosh, Russell, The Horrors, and my most obsessed obsession, Tim Minchin. :)

But I'm not in love with them or anything. I think they're attractive, but I wouldn't tell them that, and I'd like'em even if they were ugly.
I was obsessed enough to fly across the country to see tim live though.
What does that make me? :D

You are completely right, those sorts of fan girls are scary. i have a friend who is so obsessed with My Chemical Romance she broke up with her boyfriend because he said Gerard looked like a dead girl, and she insults his wife all the time, saying that she and gerard are 'meant for one another'. She's 13 :D
Maybe it's cause kids are allowed to go to gigs and stuff from a younger age now, so they are able to become stalkers. Also, i reckon the internet encourages stalking.

Re: The Tim thing, that makes you dedicated!! :p

And wow... Someone I was 'seeing' said Noel was bad at acting before and I never spoke to him again. That was a coincidence though because I didn't want to see him again anyway, not cause of the Noel thing.

And I can imagine Lyn-Z gets a lot of shit thrown at her, Dee might do too. But Lyn-Z... I've heard little fans like that go to her gigs JUST to stare evils at her, that's fucked up. MCR fans are worse than Boosh fans I think cause they bring in younger/more 'emo' fans, it's no secret.

I do agree with you at the last point too, it's so so so easy to look at their myspaces and comment on them, so easy to find out where they're gonna be [as in gigs and stuff], easy to find out where they hang out sometimes!!

I only recently started listening to MCR, and it's amazing all arguments among their fans.
"I was a fan from their first album. Oh. You only heard the black parade, well you aren't a real fan then. are you. MCR saved my life. I tried to kill myself but all i could see was gerards face."
They totally freak me out!
They really live up to the emo stereotype :D

Is that a real quote?!?!

Seriously, people need to chill out! That last bit is a bit sweet though but still...

And yeah, but Gerard does fuel it sometimes when he talks about suicide and not to do it at his gigs, but I don't know how often he does that, so....

10/03/08 @ 08:19

That is most certainly a real quote, and i have seen ones waaaaaay more weird than that.
A lot of it involves ganging up on recent fans and also comparing levels of depression.
I think gerard sometimes says pretty dumb stuff when he's on stage, as he's a total egomaniac
who gets to be in a room with thousands of people hanging off his every word :D
Also, a lot of his weirder quote were when he was still on drugs, i think :)
I think gerard is a bit of an idiot really...
How obsessed a fangirl do you think you are???

Me? I'm number 2 with tendencies of a number 3, but I can be a number 1 too...it depends who it is to be fair, with The Horrors it's gonna be a 2 with hints of a 3 but with Noel because I'm more used to him now, it's more of a 1 with a bit of 2.

MCR fans are dumb sometimes and it really isn't good to prove the emo stereotype right. Seriously, that really wants to make me punch someone, "I'm more depressed than you, look at my cuts!" "Yeah? Well I'm bipolar and a manic depresaive!" Yeah? Fuck off... They're worse than the OMG I LOVE YOU, MARRY ME fangirls because it's just fucking wrong.

I've never really thought of Gerard as an egomaniac actually cause I don't really know him that well...for an MCR fan anyway cause I do like em a bit.

I'd say I'm a level two for both Russell and The Boosh. Living in the US makes it rather hard to stalk them, although Russ is over here at the moment, haha. If he were to go to New York or something for a talk show appearance I would probably take a train up there to see if I could indeed meet him and get my copy of "My Booky Wook" signed, but I don't think that would be stalking. I just really admire his work and everything he's overcome. Yes, of course I find him attractive and I wouldn't turn it down if it came to "hitting that", but I'm not going to be lurking around for it.

Chances are if I met any of them, they'd probably think I was a mute because I'd not know what to say! When I met Tim Burgess it was all I could do to get a sensible word out of my mouth, but I did manage to get his lovely wife to take a pic of us together. :D

Haha 'hitting that' :D

Oh god I forgot about Russell...I'm not as obsessed with him anymore though, that's why i had to take his name out of the blog description and replace him with The Horrors because I obviously talk about them more.

[I'd hit that too..]

I think it's a fine line between really admiring someone and being a fangirl though, they're so easily confused. I can say I really like The Horrors work all I want on the Boosh forum but I don't get taken seriously by the vast majority just because I find them really attractive and piss about a lot.

I'm the opposite with you when it comes to meeting people, I'll talk more than I should and say dumb things cause I don't think before I speak. I'll accidentally swear and say things that don't need to be said. Sometimes I'll be too shy to go up to people though so I don't even get a chance to be a mute!

Heee this is making me laugh - i once saw a comment on The Horrors' myspace that said something like 'WAAOUU I LOVE THE HORRORS I LOVE JOSHUA ITS HAIR ITS EYES ITS MOUTH ITS EVERYTHING!!!!! LOVE!!! Xxxxxxxxx' - those crazy mexifangirls...

STiCKs13STiCKs13 [Member]
10/03/08 @ 17:45

That's insane....

I've realised a lot of 'alternative' people get fangirls a lot, The Horrors, MCR, Noel Fielding, Russell Brand etc...

Though Russell, he brings it on himself! Come to think of it, I think Russell has more 'groupies', I don't even have to explain why *thinks back to his gigs where he regularly 'scans' the audience to see who he'd have sex with* Some go JUST to see if they can have sex with him I'm betting, and I wouldn't be surprised.

diamondlace [Visitor]

10/03/08 @ 18:31

Yer your right, maybe its the eyeliner - someone should carry out scientific research into its possible hypnotic/brainwashing effects on young women, linking it to fangirlism.

I think I read somewhere that russell brand can tell who those women are because they always laugh a bit before he's told each joke, so yeah that's probably true too.

STiCKs13STiCKs13 [Member]
10/03/08 @ 20:19

And some cheer and woop when he takes a drink of water.... That annoys me a bit. [haha that reminds me a bit of at the Boosh signing when a group of people cheered and nothing was even happening and I went, "What happened? Did Noel blink or something?"]

When I last saw him [Russell] a few months ago I was front row and some woman was obviously one of the groupies...well, it wasn't obvious but she was front row too, wearing a low top and kept smiling in a flirty way. Then again, you never can tell if they're just attracted to him or want the sex.

Haha yeah I blame the eyeliner too!! :D

What I was thinking is, I really want to get a group of younger people together who like those sort of people, let half of them listen to The Horrors that know what they look like and half that don't to see if the first group end up liking the music more cause they're attractive/the sort of style that attracts fangirls.

diamondlace [Visitor]

10/03/08 @ 21:24

Good idea! Thing is i'm not sure if I would have passed that experiment if I hadn't known what they looked like when I first heard them. Sometimes i've tried listening to The Horrors whilst imagining they are actually The Magic Numbers (not meaning to be mean), to see if it makes a difference, but it's hard to tell because I know they're not really. It's not that I like their looks more than their music, it's just that it ties in with their whole thing as a band, and I do like their image in a non-OMGZ way.

'It's not that I like their looks more than their music, it's just that it ties in with their whole thing as a band' That is EXACTLY how I feel!

It's like in an interview in Mexico with Rhys and Josh and the interviewer says how their music is a bit horror movie like and so are their videos, then he asked if that's what they were going for. Rhys says because their music is so dark, it works best with the creepy videos.

A few weeks back i was listening to the Russell Brand podcast andit made me laugh to hear that they were using the show to search for people that they could have sex with.
Safe to say, they were told a few weeks later by the BBC that it was inappropriate and had to stop doing it.
Russell definitely does bring it upon himself.

Hahaaaaaaa that so Russell, I listened to that show!

Russell brings too much on himself, but that's just him... :p

Yeah, it's like a reflection of their influences and their style of music, not some over-thought 'look' or gimmick or something, and I think it's cool.

From that, I'm probably a level 1 or 2. I would hope so anyways!
Yeah, it annoys me when, (like you say) literally NOTHING happens to make people cheer. & I don't see why people think 'famous' people can't walk around and be 'normal' (so to speak.) It's like they think when people get famous they've got to walk around with a sign saying, 'I'm Famous.' That would just be stupid and put everyone off. They just don't think that they 'got' famous. That's how they acted before you even realised it was 'them'. You could of walked past them one day and said, 'Cor, he's/she's ugly.' Although sometimes the type of thing their famous is attractive so I'm not sure where that 'fangirl' was coming from... I say sometimes because some people,(I know a few) that ay they want to go out with a famous person or *marry* (In one case I've heard) NOT because of what they do. That disgusts me a fair bit to be honest. I know this is a tad off-topic but the other day I was looking at these newly weds in the paper and my mate was commenting on how ugly they were. I was ashamed to be her friend at that point because what if they had a different face and the same personality, you would surely like them then. It just annoys me these days it's more often than not purely focused on looks.
Sorry that was a little long and if you get to here, you're very patient ! Thanks all same, love your blogs!

I totally agree with you and admire that because of your age. Not being ageist but it is actually true that most girls your age that are into The Mighty Boosh are all over Noel and being annoying fangirl twats...but you're not.

I blame the media. I blame the media all the time when stuff happens but it is actually the media's fault! They big people up way too much and have people think that famous people are of a different species, the papparazzi [who I hate and shall be doing a post on them at some point] are simply the worst, they piss me off no end. Noel Fielding shops at Tesco's? Really? OH MY FRIGGIN GOD!!!!! GUYS, GUYS!!! QUICK, GET YOUR CAMERAS, I SAW HIM GO IN, HE'LL COME OUT IN A BIT...FUCKING HURRY!!!!! Honestly, am I being naive or something but I reeeeeeally don't see the big deal!

And about the ugly thing, yeah, someone commented on a Horrors post saying that Josh should be my favourite because he's the hottest one. O.o THAT pissed me off. Actually, lemme find it...

'Hiya. u av gud taste however Joshua is so fit u shud like him da most'

Kill me now.

My niece is 14 now..I think, and she's very shallow. I was looking at a pic of one of my friends, just scrolling through and she was looking and went, "Uhh, she looks like she's fat" ...What?!!?! Yeah, hi, I'm Sticks but you should know one thing about me, I only make friends with slim people, yeah? Cool.

Also, about the marriage thing again, that pisses me off too because in all honesty, I don't think I'd want to commit myself to him fully but if I were to marry Noel, it would be because I honestly think he has an awesome personality [which actually makes him more attractive in my opinion] and he makes me laugh. Yeah, I find him attractive too but so what? That's just a bonus.

How can you ever marry someone purely for looks? How?? You can't commit yourself to looks, that's insane!

...Wow, that was long too. :p

It's like (this was a scene in this acting thing I did they other day actually) a man marrying a gorgeous model for her looks and money, and nothing else. If she got kidnapped he wouldn't give a damn.
I totally agree with you on the marriage thing, if I met a handsome guy but he was obnoxious and ignorant then to hell with him, but people who are 'attractive' are also usually confident, and believe they 'are' attractive, I think that's why quieter people (I get this from incidents at school) are forgotten even though they have an amazing personality and don't think they have what the other 'louder' people do. They get intimidated. ^ Sorry that's a little off-topic again but let me back-track...

I have a friend who found out I was into The Mighty Boosh and Noel and & Julian and that, and she goes, 'How can you like Noel Fielding? He's so unattractive.'
Like you say, part of what makes him attractive is his lovely personality and comedy. Personally I think he's a good-looking guy but everyone has their different tastes whatever the circumstances.
The paps push me over the edge sometimes. ( That sounds silly as if I'm being followed by them but even for me it's hard to watch people getting literally harassed by paps.)
I'm not a big fan of Britney, but the publicity and everything she was gettign was hurendous!
I saw a video of Noel gettign otu of a car going to see 'The Kills'(?) Wow, he got OUT of a car. Wait, even better we can now get a picture of him IN the car!!!
And it's not you being naive, I totally agree it's not a big deal AT ALL.
Well, I've let some feelings out there... phew. Sorry it was long again! I had to let it out!

I could never marry someone for their looks because that isn't marriage to me, marriage is a connection of souls and similar interests that you feel from no one else.

I saw that video of Noel going to see The Kills earlier! I think I got that fangirl comment from that video or from a video that was featured from that one or something. I think he handles the paps well though but he must get annoyed, I would! I'd probably have kicked one already.
